Start with the incident-specific sequence

Restrict affected execution paths, preserve package and build evidence and coordinate credential containment through clean administrative systems. Avoid running suspect lifecycle code while gathering routine package information.

Use the current primary guidance and the accountable incident lead to resolve sequencing conflicts. Coordinate parallel teams before changing shared identities or destroying evidence. Urgent containment may need to proceed before every record is collected, but the decision and evidence lost should be documented.

Restore a trusted operating path

Rebuild with reviewed dependencies and verified artifacts, replace exposed credentials after controlling their capture path and review repository and publishing activity for unauthorized changes.

  • Review accessible credentials and publishing activity with the responsible owners.
  • Verify clean build inputs, scoped credentials and the resulting published artifact.
  • Map delayed releases and customer commitments to the affected build pipelines.

Verify before resuming

Demonstrate the dependency path is removed or remediated, verify replacement build outputs and test revoked access. Record which distributed products were reviewed and how their integrity was assessed.

Ask the operational owner to exercise the essential workflow, including background tasks and customer exceptions. Keep a short record of what passed, what failed and what remains untested. Define who may accept an exception and when it must be revisited; an exception should not disappear into a general restoration announcement.

A scenario to rehearse

Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A package is absent from the application’s direct dependency list but appears in the CI lockfile through a build tool. The exercise follows the install path and publishing credentials rather than closing the case after a source-code search.

Keep customers informed

Use the approved affected-product list and its evidence date.

A clear product-support brief with confirmed scope and pending checks.

Restart decision

Authorize releases only when the build environment, publishing identity and resulting artifacts have sufficient evidence of integrity.

After stabilization, review which shared dependency allowed the exposure to spread or slowed recovery. Choose a measurable improvement and an accountable owner. A new platform is useful only when its responsibilities, evidence and recovery path fit the business requirement.
