The business process at risk
JavaScript development and build pipelines that install the affected package directly or through another dependency.
A dependency introduced for one feature may reach authority used to publish unrelated software. The business needs to distinguish affected development environments from released products and investigate whether the release process itself was used.
Build an estimate from your own operation
Estimate interruption, investigation, recovery and continuing control costs separately. Use a range and state the assumptions. Avoid adding overlapping losses twice: an order delayed and later fulfilled is different from an order permanently lost. The report does not assign a universal dollar loss or a probability of breach.
- Interruption: affected transactions or staff hours × your measured contribution or cost, adjusted for work recovered later.
- Response: internal hours, specialist support, clean capacity and supplier coordination actually required.
- Recovery: rebuilding, validation, transaction reconciliation and customer support during the transition.
- Continuing operation: ownership, maintenance, access review and recovery testing after normal service returns.
Decisions for the operating team
- Map delayed releases and customer commitments to the affected build pipelines.
- Maintain approved alternatives for urgent fixes while normal publishing is restricted.
- Assign ownership of package publishing and emergency release approval.
A scenario to rehearse
Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A package is absent from the application’s direct dependency list but appears in the CI lockfile through a build tool. The exercise follows the install path and publishing credentials rather than closing the case after a source-code search.
Evidence before accepting the cost
A release assurance decision with investment priorities for reducing publishing risk.
Compare immediate continuity work with longer-term architecture changes. Migration can reduce specific maintenance responsibilities, but it cannot replace investigation of an active compromise. Evaluate the controls and retained responsibilities of the proposed operating model, including recovery and exit.

What evidence would let us confidently distribute a new version after this incident?
