Start with the incident-specific sequence

Follow the vendor’s affected-site guidance and restrict suspect access. Preserve evidence and protect current business records before destructive restoration, using a clean response environment.

Use the current primary guidance and the accountable incident lead to resolve sequencing conflicts. Coordinate parallel teams before changing shared identities or destroying evidence. Urgent containment may need to proceed before every record is collected, but the decision and evidence lost should be documented.

Restore a trusted operating path

Restore or rebuild from trusted files and database evidence, apply verified software and replace relevant credentials. Reconcile legitimate post-backup transactions without reintroducing untrusted changes.

  • Assign separate owners for technical cleanup and transaction reconciliation.
  • Reconcile approved business records and test checkout, callbacks and publishing after recovery.
  • Build a register of transactions requiring reconciliation after restoration.

Verify before resuming

Validate site integrity, account permissions, checkout or publishing behavior and recovery of genuine customer activity. Confirm that the affected plugin and unauthorized persistence are no longer present.

Ask the operational owner to exercise the essential workflow, including background tasks and customer exceptions. Keep a short record of what passed, what failed and what remains untested. Define who may accept an exception and when it must be revisited; an exception should not disappear into a general restoration announcement.

A scenario to rehearse

Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A retailer restores last week’s clean backup and removes the malicious files, but loses two days of valid orders. The exercise requires a safe reconciliation process and customer-service plan before the restore is approved.

Keep customers informed

Reconcile customer enquiries against approved payment and fulfilment records.

An order-exception queue and an approved customer update tied to the investigation.

Restart decision

Reopen normal publishing or trading only after both technical integrity and business-record reconciliation have been accepted by their owners.

After stabilization, review which shared dependency allowed the exposure to spread or slowed recovery. Choose a measurable improvement and an accountable owner. A new platform is useful only when its responsibilities, evidence and recovery path fit the business requirement.
