The business process at risk

WordPress publishing and commerce sites where a privileged plugin can affect content, accounts, database records and customer-facing behavior.

A site can keep selling while its integrity is uncertain. Restoring an earlier database can also erase legitimate orders or support activity, so recovery must reconcile security with the business transactions created after the trusted backup.

Build an estimate from your own operation

Estimate interruption, investigation, recovery and continuing control costs separately. Use a range and state the assumptions. Avoid adding overlapping losses twice: an order delayed and later fulfilled is different from an order permanently lost. The report does not assign a universal dollar loss or a probability of breach.

  • Interruption: affected transactions or staff hours × your measured contribution or cost, adjusted for work recovered later.
  • Response: internal hours, specialist support, clean capacity and supplier coordination actually required.
  • Recovery: rebuilding, validation, transaction reconciliation and customer support during the transition.
  • Continuing operation: ownership, maintenance, access review and recovery testing after normal service returns.

Decisions for the operating team

  • Build a register of transactions requiring reconciliation after restoration.
  • Coordinate maintenance, fulfilment and support while site integrity is checked.
  • Authorize a clean recovery and independent checks of customer transaction continuity.

A scenario to rehearse

Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A retailer restores last week’s clean backup and removes the malicious files, but loses two days of valid orders. The exercise requires a safe reconciliation process and customer-service plan before the restore is approved.

Evidence before accepting the cost

A recovery approval and a costed platform decision based on ongoing ownership.

Compare immediate continuity work with longer-term architecture changes. Migration can reduce specific maintenance responsibilities, but it cannot replace investigation of an active compromise. Evaluate the controls and retained responsibilities of the proposed operating model, including recovery and exit.

Decision checkpoint

Which maintenance responsibilities would a migration remove, and which would remain with us?
