Connect exposure, ownership and verification
Coordinate artifact triage with endpoint and identity response. Download time, version labels and execution history may disagree; retain the evidence behind each classification. Avoid clearing a host solely because it was used with an unaffected cloud account.
Your immediate priorities
- Inventory CLI artifacts and execution hosts across staff and automation.
- Map accessible credentials to owners and review their downstream activity.
How to work through the decision
Maintain one investigation record linking the relevant asset, identity, business workflow, evidence location and accountable owner. Distinguish confirmed facts, working hypotheses and missing telemetry. Coordinate changes across teams so one action does not invalidate another team’s evidence or recovery path. Define acceptance before restoration, including the tests that must fail as well as the functions that must succeed.
Evidence to ask for
An artifact-host-identity register with evidence and a recovery decision for each host.
Are we following where the binary ran or merely which cloud service it was meant to manage?
Work with the next person
Give the engineer a scoped investigation and change plan with preservation requirements and acceptance tests. Bring unresolved business tradeoffs back to the owner rather than treating them as purely technical choices.

A scenario to rehearse
Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A developer downloaded the CLI for a one-time task on a laptop that also held production cloud credentials. The exercise traces the laptop’s authority instead of limiting investigation to the vendor named on the binary.
What a useful outcome looks like
An artifact-host-identity register with evidence and a recovery decision for each host. Keep the decision dated and return to it if new evidence changes the scope.
