Produce evidence that the control works
Do not treat routine package inspection or token rotation as automatically safe. Work through the maintainer’s current guidance and the incident lead, then rebuild from verified inputs. Release provenance should be examined alongside package behavior and the authority behind the release.
Your immediate priorities
- Preserve lockfiles and install evidence without executing suspect package lifecycle code.
- After approved containment, validate clean dependencies and retired credential rejection.
How to work through the decision
Work in the approved environment and keep secrets out of tickets, logs and chat. Record the artifact or configuration being tested, the expected behavior and the observed result. Test rejection of unauthorized access alongside successful business behavior. Preserve enough evidence for another person to review the conclusion, while minimizing sensitive data. A passing smoke test is one observation, not proof that every exposure path has been eliminated.
Evidence to ask for
A reproducible clean build with evidence that the destructive path and exposed authority are controlled.
What code runs during installation before our application ever imports the SDK?
Work with the next person
Return a reproducible verification record to the technical manager, including untested paths and assumptions. Identify the operational owner of any follow-up test that cannot run during the immediate change window.
Continue with the technical manager report for this topic.
A scenario to rehearse
Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A developer attempts an immediate GitHub-token rotation using a generic incident checklist. The exercise stops the action until responders account for the maintainer’s warning about the destructive service and establish a safe sequence.
What a useful outcome looks like
A reproducible clean build with evidence that the destructive path and exposed authority are controlled. Keep the decision dated and return to it if new evidence changes the scope.
