Trace the exposure path
Map what the business placed in database tooling, query text, support materials and commercial records. Separate production table contents from control-plane metadata and information copied into support workflows.
Build a small evidence map from the initiating dependency to the identities, business data and operations it can reach. Include indirect consumers and scheduled work. An inventory entry describes a possible path; activity logs and other account evidence are needed to establish what happened on that path.
Collect the right evidence
- Map service accounts and review relevant audit coverage.
- Inspect approved diagnostic samples for sensitive literals and credential references.
- Record asset identifiers, artifact or configuration versions, permission scope, evidence dates and the owner of each unresolved question. Do not include secret values.
Control and repair
Preserve the vendor notice and relevant account evidence. Have identity and data owners review possible credential exposure and restrict suspect access according to current account-specific guidance.
Review service credentials, support-data handling and the permissions connecting the database to other workloads. Reduce unnecessary sensitive content in diagnostics and query tooling.
Prove the boundary
Reconcile the vendor’s confirmed categories with the business’s own data inventory and access logs. Record what has been checked, what remains unknown and who owns the next vendor follow-up.
Use positive tests for the business function and negative tests for the access that should now be denied. Record which environment was tested and whether it represents production. Do not treat a successful login, clean homepage or healthy infrastructure graph as a substitute for an authorization or integrity test.
Engineering handoff
A reviewed diagnostic-data policy and an access test for the application identity.
An investigation matrix linking data categories, account identifiers, evidence and open questions.
Acceptance gate
Close the business investigation only after customer-specific exposure questions and required account actions have an explicit, documented disposition.
