Trace the exposure path
Identify the verifier for each important connection: operating-system store, language runtime, container bundle, proxy or custom mutual-TLS configuration. Record which updates become active only after restart or redeployment.
Build a small evidence map from the initiating dependency to the identities, business data and operations it can reach. Include indirect consumers and scheduled work. An inventory entry describes a possible path; activity logs and other account evidence are needed to establish what happened on that path.
Collect the right evidence
- Map critical outbound and mutual-TLS connections to their validating stores.
- Rebuild affected runtime images and verify the deployed revision uses the intended trust material.
- Record asset identifiers, artifact or configuration versions, permission scope, evidence dates and the owner of each unresolved question. Do not include secret values.
Control and repair
Use the relevant vendor’s distrust and upgrade guidance. Escalate suspected interception through the incident process; do not disable certificate validation to clear an operational error.
Update the actual validating component and its deployed trust material. Rebuild images and restart processes where needed, then validate the intended upstream connections and custom trust configurations.
Prove the boundary
Use a controlled validation test and runtime inventory to show the affected trust is rejected while required legitimate connections continue to work.
Use positive tests for the business function and negative tests for the access that should now be denied. Record which environment was tested and whether it represents production. Do not treat a successful login, clean homepage or healthy infrastructure graph as a substitute for an authorization or integrity test.
Engineering handoff
A validation record linking the runtime, trust source, test result and release identifier.
A verifier-to-service remediation register and a controlled integration test record.
Acceptance gate
Complete the change only when every relevant verifier has evidence of remediation and service owners have accepted any integration exceptions.
