Trace the exposure path

Inventory variable names and their permission scope without copying secret values into the incident register. Trace each credential to its issuing service, owner, consumers and available usage history.

Build a small evidence map from the initiating dependency to the identities, business data and operations it can reach. Include indirect consumers and scheduled work. An inventory entry describes a possible path; activity logs and other account evidence are needed to establish what happened on that path.

Collect the right evidence

  • Identify credentials present during the relevant period and the logs available at their issuing services.
  • Inspect configuration references and deployment history without exposing secret values.
  • Record asset identifiers, artifact or configuration versions, permission scope, evidence dates and the owner of each unresolved question. Do not include secret values.

Control and repair

Follow current provider guidance, restrict suspect access and preserve available evidence. Establish a trusted administrative path before issuing replacement secrets that the same exposure could capture.

Replace affected credentials through their issuing services, invalidate the old values and redeploy verified applications. Review permissions and remove dormant environment variables and unused integrations.

Prove the boundary

Demonstrate that replacement credentials work only for intended operations and old credentials fail. Reconcile downstream access and spending records with the customer-specific incident timeline.

Use positive tests for the business function and negative tests for the access that should now be denied. Record which environment was tested and whether it represents production. Do not treat a successful login, clean homepage or healthy infrastructure graph as a substitute for an authorization or integrity test.

Engineering handoff

A verified deployment and integration test record covering active and scheduled consumers.

A credential recovery ledger with revocation evidence and unresolved downstream questions.

Acceptance gate

Resume each integration when its owner can show a trusted execution path, controlled credentials and an explicit decision on unresolved account activity.
