Produce evidence that the control works

Remove secret reuse from the developer workflow and make credential changes verifiable. Do not paste full tokens into issue trackers or chat to prove which key was affected. Use provider key identifiers, timestamps and approved log exports.

Your immediate priorities

  • Update the integration only after the authoritative account has revoked the old key.
  • Test the replacement on a scoped workload and check the corresponding provider usage record.

How to work through the decision

Work in the approved environment and keep secrets out of tickets, logs and chat. Record the artifact or configuration being tested, the expected behavior and the observed result. Test rejection of unauthorized access alongside successful business behavior. Preserve enough evidence for another person to review the conclusion, while minimizing sensitive data. A passing smoke test is one observation, not proof that every exposure path has been eliminated.

Evidence to ask for

A secret-free change record showing revocation, replacement scope and successful test usage.

Does deleting the tool configuration actually invalidate the credential at its issuer?

Work with the next person

Return a reproducible verification record to the technical manager, including untested paths and assumptions. Identify the operational owner of any follow-up test that cannot run during the immediate change window.

A scenario to rehearse

Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A development team removes a key from a coding tool but leaves the same key active at its provider. The exercise tests whether the team recognises that removing a local configuration entry is not revocation.

What a useful outcome looks like

A secret-free change record showing revocation, replacement scope and successful test usage. Keep the decision dated and return to it if new evidence changes the scope.
