Produce evidence that the control works
Review automation as executable security-sensitive code. Inspect how untrusted event data enters commands, which jobs receive secrets and which identities they can request. A pinned external action does not make a malicious local workflow safe.
Your immediate priorities
- Test event and environment restrictions without exposing real production secrets.
- Reduce job permissions and validate cloud federation conditions for the intended repository and environment.
How to work through the decision
Work in the approved environment and keep secrets out of tickets, logs and chat. Record the artifact or configuration being tested, the expected behavior and the observed result. Test rejection of unauthorized access alongside successful business behavior. Preserve enough evidence for another person to review the conclusion, while minimizing sensitive data. A passing smoke test is one observation, not proof that every exposure path has been eliminated.
Evidence to ask for
A reviewed workflow and negative tests showing unauthorized events cannot deploy.
Can a change to this workflow bypass the review that protects application code?
Work with the next person
Return a reproducible verification record to the technical manager, including untested paths and assumptions. Identify the operational owner of any follow-up test that cannot run during the immediate change window.
Continue with the technical manager report for this topic.
A scenario to rehearse
Illustrative exercise, not an observed customer incident: A pull request changes only a workflow file, so an application-focused review misses it. The exercise asks which event can run the workflow and whether that job can reach production secrets.
What a useful outcome looks like
A reviewed workflow and negative tests showing unauthorized events cannot deploy. Keep the decision dated and return to it if new evidence changes the scope.
